Recession Mode

At anytime during the examination the Recession Mode can be activated by either pressing Ctrl+R or pressing the Recession button located in the Probing Mode Toolbar.

Recession can be recorded in three different ways:
- 1 site (1 facial) or
- 2 sites (1 facial and 1 lingual) or
- 6 sites (3 facial and 3 lingual)
The number of recession sites is selected by pressing the Modify Visit changedata_btn.gif (155 bytes) button on the Periodontal Toolbar. Select the number of sites that you wish to measure.

Recession is recorded as the difference between two measurements. Therefore two readings have to be taken with the probe. To make the first reading place the tip of the Probe to the base of the sulcus and bring the edge of the sleeve to the gingival margin. Press the center foot switch. A single "beep" is heard indicating that the first reading (pocket depth) has been entered into the computer. For the second measurement, leave the probe tip in place at the base of the sulcus and raise the sleeve to the ideal location for the gingival margin. Press the center foot switch. A sound will indicate that the reading has been entered. The difference between the two measurements is automatically calculated and displayed on the monitor. During a six site recording, the first reading obtained is recorded as a Pocket Depth value. The second reading will be used to calculate the Recession value.

Recession readings will appear on the screen above the maxillary arch or below the mandibular arch. On the monitor, recession is rounded up at .4 mm to avoid under diagnosis. For example, 3.0 to 3.2 will appear on the monitor as 3 and 3.4 to 3.8 will appear as 4 on the monitor. The exact values are stored in the computer without rounding. These exact values can be viewed by Magnifying the tooth.

The left foot switch may be used to indicate "minimal attached gingiva" and the right foot switch to indicate "no attached gingiva".

Recession may be entered from the keyboard (1-9). "M" for "minimal attached gingiva" and "N" for "no attached gingiva" can also be entered from the keyboard.

To make a correction, hold down either side foot switch to enter the Moving Mode. You may reach a help dialog for the Recession Mode by simultaneously holding down both side foot switches for two seconds.

Warning and Danger levels of recession can be set by the pressing Options button from the Main Toolbar. Then open the Periodontal Page Options. If a warning or danger area is recorded, it will be signaled by a specific sound. Normal values will appear on the screen in black. Abnormal levels will appear red.

On the chart, recession can be represented three different ways. A series of blue Depth Bars, and/or a line. The symbols used can be selected by pressing the Options button from the Main Toolbar. Then open the Periodontal Page Options. Minimal attached gingiva is represented by and no attached gingiva is symbolized by noattach.gif (76 bytes).
